Meet Matt, our resident Neuroscientist

Summary

  • The Recycling Dilemma: Explore how outdated recycling practices continue to burden our environment.
  • Personal Reflections: Learn about Matt’s journey from nostalgic, sustainable practices to today’s challenges.
  • Innovative Solutions: See how Green Llama is transforming the cleaning industry by eliminating plastic waste.

Recycling: A Problem That Persists

Recycling wasn’t really a thing during Matt’s childhood, but he remembers it beginning to take shape in his teen years. One of the most staggering observations he has is that, despite the passage of time, recycling remains complicated, cumbersome, and problematic. It begs the question: wouldn’t it be better if we didn’t need to recycle as much?

From Sedgley to Sustainable Innovation

Matt grew up in a small town called Sedgley in the West Midlands of England. His academic journey led him to earn a Ph.D. in Molecular Neuroscience from the University of Bristol in the UK, and later, he embarked on a career that took him from Louisville, KY to Recife, Brasil, and finally to Johnson City, TN. Along the way, he earned accolades including a young neuroscientist award, secured funding from prestigious research bodies like CNPq and the NIH, and co-authored over 30 publications in top scientific journals. When he isn’t immersed in his research, Matt enjoys swing dancing, music, and hiking – a stress reliever that reconnects him with nature.

A Glimpse into the Past: Sustainable Practices That Worked

Reflecting on his youth, Matt recalls a time when recycling and sustainable practices were part of everyday life. As a teenager, he worked as a milkman in an era when electric milk floats delivered milk in glass bottles. Customers would leave their empty glass bottles out, which were then washed, sterilized, and reused, a truly sustainable system. Today, however, those practices have been largely replaced by combustion-engine vehicles and disposable plastic bottles, a change that leaves him both nostalgic and concerned.

The Plastic Problem: A Call for Change

With 300 million tons of plastic produced each year and less than 9% recycled, the current system is unsustainable. Drawing from his early experiences and scientific training, Matt realized that the solution isn’t to recycle more, but to reduce our reliance on single-use plastics altogether. This insight inspired his work with Green Llama, where he played a key role in eliminating plastic from almost every aspect of their cleaning products.

Turning Back the Tide with Green Llama

Together with Kay, Matt helped create Green Llama to reinvigorate simple, sustainable ideas that once worked so well. Their approach is clear: if recycling is too complicated and inefficient, why not design products that generate less waste from the start? By rethinking the entire cleaning process, Green Llama Clean products are engineered to minimize plastic use, ensuring that sustainability isn’t an afterthought but a foundational principle.

Looking Ahead: Sustainable Simplicity

Matt is passionate about furthering sustainable cleaning practices. Although he has some cool ideas in the pipeline for future products, his current focus is on growing the concept of sustainable cleaning overall. “It really doesn’t have to be complicated,” he says. His vision is to create a world where everyday products are designed with the planet in mind, where less waste means a healthier environment for us all.
