You’re trying to do the right thing. You pick up two bottles of all-purpose cleaner. One has a logo with a leaping bunny. The other boasts that it’s “USDA Certified Biobased.” A third one simply says “Vegan.”
Which one is better? And what do any of them really mean?
Welcome to the confusing world of eco-labels. For those committed to sustainable living, understanding these labels is your most powerful weapon in the fight against greenwashing. Think of third-party certifications as a background check for your products. They prove that a company isn’t just talking the talk; they’ve had an independent expert verify their claims. But not all seals are created equal.

The Big Idea: In short: No animal testing. Period.

It’s one of the most comprehensive and trustworthy seals you can find on a cleaning product.

It’s a very tough standard to meet.

4. USDA Certified Biobased
The Big Idea: This product is made from plants and other renewable materials.
What it Really Guarantees: This label from the U.S. Department of Agriculture verifies that a product is composed of a certain percentage of "biobased" content—meaning it’s derived from plants and other renewable agricultural, marine, and forestry materials. The label will state the exact percentage. This is a direct measure of a product's reliance on renewable resources versus petroleum-based chemicals.
Why It Matters to You: It’s a clear indicator that you’re choosing a product that moves away from fossil fuels and towards a more regenerative, plant-powered economy.
